MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT:
It is my honour as the first President of the Indian Sign Language Interpreter Association (ISLIA) to welcome you to the world of the Indian sign language interpreter and our profession.
ISLIA is made up of a small team of Indian Sign Language (ISL) trainers and interpreters who have all been certified by, and are registered with the only government body that offers this; AYJNIHH (the Ali Yavar Jung National Institute of Hearing Handicapped ( Mumbai) and RCI (the Rehabilitation Council of India New Delhi).
Our aim is to provide high quality and professional services to the Deaf community in India. In addition to that ISLIA has tasked itself with raising awareness within both Deaf and hearing communities to the existence of our services, and the positive impact they can have on the quality of life of a Deaf person.
In order to achieve this and our other aims, we are committed to create opportunities for interpreters to enter into advanced programmes of Interpreter training. This alongside our ability to educate people on the cultural richness you can find within the Deaf community, and our aim to promote and campaign for the
recognition of Indian Sign Language as a language in its own right, will allow ISLIA to help the Deaf community in India to exercise their right to have access to goods and services in their first language, ISL. For example we have identified that there is growing need to have interpreters working in many domains ranging from legal, medical, and education to places of work and public access.
India as a country, and the Indian Sign Language Interpreter profession in comparison to some of its western counterparts is still developing, therefore we have to look towards them and the research that has been conducted in the US and European countries for example, to assist us in our own growth and development.
So, it is an exciting time of learning, growth, development and achievement that I look forward to during my office as President of ISLIA. Good luck!
